  • Day Trip: Kinabatangan Community and Culture Introduction

9:00am:Guests depart from Sandakan Harbour jetty and journey across the vast Sandakan Bay before entering the series of narrow mangrove waterways that allow boats passage to the Kinabatangan River estuary through the centre of Malaysia's largest wetlands. The beautiful landscape and diversity of wildlife to be seen on this boat ride makes getting to Abai a major part of the Kinabatangan experience. The journey takes approximately two hours but can take much longer when factoring in time for wildlife viewing and photo taking. Pick-up point can also be arranged from the village of Sukau or Bilit which is respectively 40km and 60km away by boat from Abai.
11:00am:Guests arrive at Abai Jetty. After registering at the Abai Community Reception Centre and being briefed on the day’s activities, visitors will be treated to a sightseeing tour of the village. This includes meeting the people, have a look at the village’s paddy field, traditional boat making techniques, community tree nurseries and craft making methods.
12:00noon:Lunch time! Guest shall be served a traditional Abai meal prepared from local ingredients including fresh water prawn, various types of fish, fresh coconut, etc. We also serve vegetarian menu.

Our tree planting sites are located approximately 20 minutes by boat upstream. Guests will be briefed upon arrival at the tree planting site by our localised guides. These areas are known to be ancestral migratory routes of the bornean pygmy elephants so the areas for tree planting activity taking place will vary depending on their presence.

    • (2) Cruise through Pitas Hidden Lake:
Journey to a little visited oxbow lake near to Abai. A quiet place that is excellent for birding and search for primates, the area is also home to the ruins of old settlements, a reminder that people have lived for generations within the bountiful woods of the Kinabatangan.
3:30pm:Tea and home-made cakes will be served to take the edge off before beginning the return boat ride.
4:00pm:Guests set out on the journey back to Sandakan.
