It is estimated that Borneo is home to at least 380 species of mammals (44 endemic), 622 birds (37 endemic), over 100 amphibians, 394 fish species (149 endemic), and 15,000 plants (6,000 endemic).
Wildlife & Ecosystems
- 10 species of primate: Orang Utans, Proboscis Monkeys, Tarsiers, Long-Tailed Macaques, Pig-Tailed Macaques, Dusky Langurs, Silver-Leaf Langurs, Maroon Langurs, Gibbons, and the Slow Loris.
- 10% of Sabah's Orang Utan population in Sabah (extremely significant considering the small size of the sanctuary)
- 15% of Sabah's pygmy elephant population
- All 8 of Borneo's hornbills
- Large bird populations: the rare Storm's Stork, Raptors, Kingfishers and Partridges
- Large reptiles such as crocodiles and monitor lizards
- There are seven major ecosystems in the Kinabatangan: dry lowland dipterocarp, semi-inundated (seasonally flooded), riparian (riverine), freshwater swamp, mangrove, heath and limestone karst forests
- These varied habitats provide an extensive selection of food sources that buffer the limited seasonal production in any one forest type
- Figs are of particular importance for wildlife populations because they fruit all year round
- The Kinabatangan is the longest, largest and most biologically important river in Sabah
